Manuka Honey
Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) is a small tree, native and unique to New Zealand that grows in clusters on hillsides, in coastal areas and the edge of forests. During the heat of early summer it produces a profusion from which bees collect nectar to make manuka honey.
Scientific research led by Professor Peter Molan of the university of Waikato first established in 1981 that Manuka Honey contains powerful, unique antibacterial properties in addition to its hydrogen peroxide activity. Active manuka honey enjoys a worldwide reputation for its special abilities to aid immune response and natural wound healing. Honey products carrying the UMF symbol have been verified by an independent laboratory to have the required antibacterial strength of the Unique Manuka Factor.
The NZ honey industry has registered UMF® as a trademark so that the antibacterial activity of Manuka honey cannot be misrepresented. The UMF® number comes from a laboratory test for antibacterial activity, with the honey being compared with a standard reference antiseptic (phenol) for potency. UMF® 20+ would be equivalent in antiseptic potency to a 20% solution of phenol.
Manuka Honey which is tested and proven to have the UMF® (Unique Manuka Factor) is labeled accordingly. Only honeys with a UMF® rating higher than 10 can use the UMF® trademark.
